A blast from the past: The terror management function of nostalgia
نویسندگان
چکیده
According to terror management theory, people turn to meaning-providing structures to cope with the knowledge of inevitable mortality. Recent theory and research suggest that nostalgia is a meaning-providing resource and thus may serve such an existential function. The current research tests and supports this idea. In Experiments 1 and 2, nostalgia proneness was measured and mortality salience manipulated. In Experiment 1, when mortality was salient, the more prone to nostalgia participants were, the more they perceived life to be meaningful. In Experiment 2, when mortality was salient, the more prone to nostalgia participants were, the less death thoughts were accessible. In Experiment 3, nostalgia and mortality salience were manipulated. It was found that nostalgia buVered the eVects of mortality salience on death-thought accessibility. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. According to terror management theory, people turn to meaning-providing structures to cope with the knowledge of inevitable mortality. Recent theory and research suggest that nostalgia serves such an existential function by supplying a reservoir of meaningful life experiences which can be used as a defense against death concerns. The current research tests and supports this idea. In Experiments...
متن کاملThe Psychological Function of Nostalgia: Increasing Intrinsic Self-Expression and Decreasing Extrinsic Self-Definition
Previous findings have shown the many functions of nostalgia, for example, increasing mental health, and the current research aimed to explain those findings by testing the theoretical explanation that the benefits of nostalgia come from the fact that nostalgia reminds us of our intrinsic self. Aiming to investigate the effect of nostalgia on authenticity (intrinsic self-expression) and extrins...
متن کاملProbability Assessment and Risk Management of Progressive Collapse in Strategic Buildings Facing Blast Loads
Nowadays, as a result of increased terrorist and bomb attacks throughout the globe in the vicinity of strategic buildings, designing these structures against impact loads, particularly the blast-related ones, has been taken into more consideration. The current procedure for designing the structure against an explosion is a design against the local failure of the current elements in the first st...
متن کاملTerror management theory: Theoretical concepts, experimental research and Critics
Terror management theory (Greenberg, Pyszczynski & Solomon, 1986) considers the desire for survival as the underlying motivation for human behavior. Given his cognitive capacity and ability to think abstractly about the future, man realizes that his death is inevitable, which causes Paralysing terror. Man has developed certain psychological structures to protect himself from this terror. A cult...
متن کاملInfluence of Sudden Column Loss on Dynamic Response of Steel Moment Frames under Blast Loading
Modeling buildings response to blast and subsequent progressive collapse interested more and more researchers during the past two decades. Due to the threat from extreme loading, efforts have been made to develop methods of structural analysis and design. In this paper, progressive collapse capacity of steel moment frames was first investigated using alternate load path method, then a nonlinear...
